Why use this word generator

Meanings on every word

Each card shows the word's type, syllables and its most common meaning, with an example where we have one. No more looking up an odd word.

Words you can actually use

Choose common words for games and kids, or hard words for vocabulary building. Rare and obscure words stay out unless you ask for them.

Hand-checked themes

Animals, foods, objects, jobs and more, checked by hand so that "chat" doesn't turn up as a bird.

Games built in

Pictionary and charades modes have three levels, a timer, a hidden-word mode for the drawer and a score counter.

Family-friendly

No swear words, slurs or adult terms anywhere in the list, so it is safe for classrooms.

Private and fast

Words are picked in your browser with a secure random generator. Nothing is sent to us, and kept words stay on your device.

Frequently asked questions

What is a random word generator?
It picks English words at random, so you get ideas you would not think of yourself: for games like Pictionary, for writing prompts, for teaching vocabulary, or for names. Ours also shows each word's meaning, type and syllables.
How many words are there?
20,570 real English words in their dictionary form. "Common" uses the 9,482 most familiar ones; choose "All" to include rarer words.
What do easy, medium and hard mean?
They are based on how often a word appears in everyday English. Easy words are the most common, like "house"; hard words are ones most adults know but rarely use, like "verve".
Can I save the words I like?
Yes. Tap the star on any card to keep it. Kept words stay on your device until you clear them, and you can copy them all at once.
Where do the words and meanings come from?
The meanings and example sentences come from WordNet, the free English dictionary database from Princeton University. Word frequency comes from the open wordfreq project, and syllable counts from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary. See how it works.
Is it really random?
Yes. Words are picked with your browser's secure random number generator (the Web Crypto API), and one batch never repeats a word.
Is it suitable for kids and classrooms?
Yes. We removed swear words, slurs and adult terms from the whole list, so it is safe to use with children and on a projector.
